![]() ![]() To kill a manananggal (not the title of a third novel from Harper Lee), you had to find the monster’s trunk and sprinkle rock salt in it. She was said to be especially fond of fetuses, which she would slurp straight from their mothers’ wombs with her extremely long tongue. Then the upper half would fly around villages in search of fresh human viscera. At dusk, she would rub herself with magic oil that caused batwings to grow out of her back, talons to grow out of her fingers, and her upper body to detach from her trunk. ![]() In the daytime, the manananggal assumed the guise of a woman who lived alone in a hut in the woods. In the scary tales of our childhood, the manananggal was a bisected monster with an insatiable craving for human bopis and dinuguan. ![]()

The heat, rhythm, communication, teamwork and aggression is portrayed incredibly well in Amour et Chocolat. The author does a grand job of avoiding all of the reigning pitfalls of romance: impossible villains, characters that are TSTL, impossible pride and abhorant communication skills. One of the best features of this series is the presence of the chef's kitchen. They were incredibly likable and vulnerable. I especially enjoyed the heroine and hero, Jaime and Dominique. I read this book in one sitting, which I haven't done in a LONG, long time. ![]() Review 2: My favorite romance of the series. It's a perfectly good read, I just found it pale in comparison with what Florand had already written. Jaime and Dominique didn't have the depth or breadth of character that the other couples had. ![]() This hit those beats too, but in a more formulaic way for me. But those were so lovely, so sumptuous, with wonderfully written characters and intense emotions. If I hadn't read books one and two, I would have liked it a lot more. So when I heard that book 4 was the fan favourite, I decided to skip on over to it. Review 1: The first two books in this series were a real joy. ![]() ![]() He also taught Freshman English Composition and Creative Writing: Fiction at Rutgers University.
